Police dog battling cancer

By: Melanie Gillespie

SOMERSET, Pa. — A Somerset County police dog was recently forced to retire because of a cancer diagnosis in January.

He is still off the job, but he received some special recognition Monday night. A pet artist from Altoona heard about Somerset Borough Police Department’s story about its police dog, Arny. Rachel DiAndrea specializes in paintings for pets. She said she felt compelled by his story and wanted to give the department and his owners something special to remember him by.

She presented a watercolor painting to Arny’s Handler, Officer Brian Harbart, on Monday night in front of the borough council. “It’s a way, artistically, that I can share in some of the pain they’ve had losing Arny in the department, but also bringing the joy… To remember him as the good K9, citizen and protector of the [city] of Somerset,” DiAndrea said.

Molly wasn’t just a dog; she was our daughter, our one and only baby girl. We took her everywhere with us and she was the official greeter at my office where she came nearly every single day.

Molly loved the sunshine and would often stretch the entire length of her on even the tiniest patch of sunshine she could find either on the carpet, grass or her favorite blanket or pillow. I never met a dog who loved to stretch out by the hot fireplace more than our Molly. Sometimes she would get so hot and start to pant that we had to deliver the water bowl to her because she didn’t want to get up and leave her spot. Continue reading
