Sangamon County K-9 officer, dog injured in crash

A Sangamon County K-9 officer and his dog were injured Saturday in a two-vehicle collision at MacArthur Boulevard and Wabash Avenue.
Sheriff Wes Barr said Deputy Brian Stapleton was hurt in the crash, but his injuries were not life-threatening. Stapleton was taken by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center, where he was treated and released. His dog, Zaso, was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment of minor injuries.
Stapleton was responding to an emergency call about 11:40 a.m. when the crash occurred.
A Springfield police report said Stapleton was driving south on MacArthur with his red lights flashing and activated the siren in his vehicle as he approached the intersection. The deputy had a red light and entered the intersection when the traffic yielded the right of way.
As Stapleton proceeded through the intersection, his SUV collided with an eastbound vehicle on Wabash driven by Ruth Criswell, 77, of Edinburg, the Springfield report said. Continue reading
